The CHANGING FACE of ADOPTION!

November is Adoption Awareness Month!

It’s a time to celebrate the adoption of children by families around the world!

YET, what about the children in Ontario and outside Canada who wait for a family? Parenting by adoption is a unique way to create or to add to a family, and it has lifelong benefits for you and a child.

Consider that Ontario’s Children’s Aid Societies have approximately 200 children at any one time who are legally free and who need to be settled with his/her own adoptive family. Through private adoption, birth mothers have chosen approximately 180 adoptive families in Ontario, with most families taking their infant child home directly from hospital. As well, 30 countries have licensed Ontario adoption agencies who facilitate several hundred international adoptions annually for Ontario families.

As a private Adoption Practitioner, I often hear, “If there are so many children, why the wait?” “Who will help us find a child?”

In planning all adoptions, the focus is on finding a family for a child in order to ensure that the best interests of a child are met. This often involves considerable time to match families of similar racial & cultural backgrounds, who are prepared to address a particular child’s needs.

Adoptive parenting is an exciting experience. Applicants attend a specific training program that offers informative direction and education about parenting issues (eg. attachment, health delays, talking with a child about adoption).
